We have displayed here the results of months of effort in assigning coordinates to cities and towns mentioned in Словарь учрежденных в России ярмарок, or A Dictionary of of Market Fairs Established in Russia. Each map marker has information about trading that took place in that town in the late 1700s, towards the end of the reign of Catherine the Great.
What you are looking at is a collection of the entries from this text that were able to have coordinates assigned to them. The different colors of the icons represent the administrative division that they fall under, while their size reflects how much the text had to say about them. As you move around the map, click on different markers to bring up their descriptions from the source text, complete with links to a digital copy of the original document.
